Nelle Thompson lives a life of privilege during the turn of the century New York City. When her parents are killed in a terrible accident, she’s forced to live with her aunt’s family in a small town in Connecticut, and treated as a poor relation with no financial independence.

Broken hearted and riddled with insomnia, Nelle’s health begins a downward spiral. When a locked part of her heart blossoms around her cousin’s fiancé Mathew Janson, Nelle doesn’t know if she can endure one more heartbreak.

Miss Pearl, owner of the local apothecary shop, becomes a mother figure to Nelle, but a fateful summer day has Nelle questioning everything she’s ever believed and wondering if she’ll ever love again.

Although part of the POWER OF THE MATCHMAKER series, a multi-author project featuring the recurring character of Pearl the matchmaker, this book is a STAND-ALONE novel.

Another wonderful addition to the Power of the Matchmaker series! I loved the setting of this story in the early 1900s. The characters were so well-written — I especially loved the two main characters. There is a lot of past heartbreak for Nelle to overcome and I loved how she still managed to be kind to others despite her own personal grief and struggles.
Overall, this was a very touching, beautiful story of overcoming hardship. I loved how it all came together at the end!

First let me say that the cover is gorgeous. I’m typically drawn to more colorful things but this is so dramatic and beautiful.

Next, I’ll add that this story is a lot sad but does have the happily ever after ending. And with the sad, comes a lot of angst. Sometimes ya just want to tell people to stop having so much proper integrity and do what would be best for everyone instead of what is the proper thing to do.

This is the 4th I’ve read in this series and I’m always surprised by the matchmaker. This time I kept wondering where the matchmaker was. Didn’t seem like she was doing her job. She comes more into play toward the end of the book but for a while I kept wondering about her and her mystic that wasn’t showing up. It did show up eventually though.

I would eventually like to read all the books in this series. I’ve enjoyed all I’ve read so far.

The book is clean. It contains few kisses, some “what is going on behind that locked door?” and one good punch in the nose. No language.
