I didn’t love this book as much as I had hoped to. I didn’t realize that it would be a retelling of classic fairy tales and I think I would have preferred to read completely new fairy tale stories instead of retellings. I didn’t realize this right away because I don’t actually know the original story about the Swans so that novella was new to me. I finally caught on to it being a collection of retellings when I got to the second one.
I think I only have two things that truly bugged me while reading the book. The first was in The Pebbled Path. It was a good story but I couldn’t quite get past Hansel and Gretel being love interests instead of siblings. It felt a little creepy to me. I wouldn’t have had a problem with the story if they’d had different names.
My other problem was with Scarlet. I really don’t like stories told in first person- present tense. I find it distracting and it feels unnatural to me.
Other than those two things I enjoyed the book.
