Rebecca Connolly writes romances, both period and contemporary, because she absolutely loves a good love story. She has been creating stories since childhood, and there are home videos to prove it! She started writing them down in elementary school and has never looked back. So this is a second chance romance for a couple who were in an arranged marriage, not knowing that they each already loved each other. It is a little twisted and takes 5 years to get to the point where they might find happiness. There is a lot of sorrow, before said happiness but we do eventually get to the happily ever after.
It is a very emotional book. This couple married for 5 years really have no relationship and over the course of the book learn how to be a married couple. It was a dramatic change in their relationship that was not depicted in just their marital bed relationship. There is that, though it is closed door but there is so much leading up to it and after that is more important. I’m not a huge fan of kissing scenes as I am generally more interested in what brings them to the kiss more than the kiss itself and I know that if I use the words that went through my mind as I read some of the book, one might get the wrong impression of what this book is like. I gotta tell you though that the best scene had not a single kiss in it but was the best seduction ever. A husband and wife seducing each other on a dance floor at a ball. Everything is perfectly proper but the build up is so intense. And part of that intensity has been building up over the weeks they have been trying to become a real couple. They’ve learned about each other and how to talk and be real. And then they dance and it is amazing. Seriously. It is a great scene. Yet, perfectly proper as they stare into each others eyes with intensity. And later the author closes the door at just the right moment to not detract from that incredible scene.
It is also fun that we meet again characters we loved from the Arrangement series and not just in passing. They play a role in the story while the Grangers are in London.
I think the one thing that bothered me with this story was that both Thomas and Lily seemed very loose mouthed in talking about their marriage. They didn’t seem afraid to talk to anyone about the sorry state they were in. Eventually I decided that it was essential to the story so I stopped worrying about it.
This is the second book I’ve read in a short period of time set in Cornwall and it sounds so beautiful. And it all felt so realistic that I kept expecting to see characters from the other book I read pop up in the social settings of this one. Both my daughters have been there and say that Cornwall is magical. This book makes me believe that.
