I didn’t like this one as well as the previous one, Courting the Cowboy. (Cute cover though.) Perhaps I wasn’t reading carefully enough but more than once I had to stop, “Wait. Did X just do the opposite of what he/she just said they would do?” What I mean is stuff like Robin knowing she is attracted to Shane but thinking she cannot get involved and then the second she sees him she is showing him how much she likes him. There was no warm up or moment of hesitation or even passage of time. Or when Shane travels to meet up with Robin again and they are so happy to see each other and the next thing we know at end of the day he breaks it off with her. Where did the break up come from? I just felt like it jumped from one thing to another without an indication that it might be coming.
I did like that both characters worked to overcome their own hangup and were encouraging to the other without trying to change them. Shane worked to overcome his anger over his father and that was a hard thing to work through. I didn’t really like his character very much in the last book so I was glad to see him let go of some anger and try to be happy in life. Robin had to overcome her conflicting desires and stop fearing setting down roots.
I thought it a little odd that they talked about getting married early on but didn’t get engaged for a long time and then had a long engagement as well. Seemed like it had been decided much earlier yet he waited a year to even propose.
I liked the story well enough to want to read the next one but I hope the story line will flow a little smoother.
