Lachoneus, governor of Zarahemla, is tested in battle against the Gadiantons. He sees the invasion of his beloved country as a sign that God is not happy with the Nephites. He grows into his dual role as political leader and prophet as he organizes the people and calls them with great power to repentance.
The widowed Lachoneus has a teenage daughter, Rachel, a pampered, self-centered beauty, who is in love with Aaron, a young household servant. Aaron is shy and timid, especially around Rachel’s father. The boy searches for a way to raise himself above the status of a lowly servant, but he aligns himself with the wrong man and finds himself in mortal danger.
Giddianhi is the bold leader of the secret society of the Gadiantons Robbers. He rules his band with ruthless efficiency. A shadowy figure named Zemnarihah works his way into position as the head of Giddianhi’s secret service. As his personal body guard, Zemnarihah is sworn to protect Giddianhi; but this clever opportunist seeks to overthrow his leader and command the Gadiantons.
A letter of ultimatum from Giddianhi galvanizes Lachoneus’s situation. Faced with threat of imminent annihilation, the reluctant governor must step up to be the leader his people need or he must step down. The fate of civilization hangs in the balance.
