The courts are on his side, unless she marries someone willing to stand in her late husband’s place. Locking her heart away and devoting herself to her children is the only way Virginia can countenance such a decision.

Wearied by the world, Lucas Calvert, Earl of Annesbury, is tired of being alone. His wife’s passing six years previous left his life gray and empty. His only recourse has been to make life better for those around him, using his considerable wealth and influence. When he learns of Virginia’s plight, he knows he can save her and her sons.

During one of the rainiest summers in England’s history, Virginia and her children bring light and color back into Lucas’s life. But will Virginia’s determination to protect her heart destroy their possibility of finding happiness together?

I have really enjoyed this series. I read them completely out of order not realizing that they intersected characters but it was okay. I think the only ones that really mattered was that one should read The Gentleman Physician before reading The Earl and His Lady which luckily I did. This one could stand alone too but the situation makes more sense if one has read The Gentleman Physician prior. You get a better understanding of Virginia’s situation and her plight due to Mr. Macon.

I love the Earl and his kind and good heart. He is pretty swoon worthy. And Virginia is a lovely woman and mother. The boys are sweet and I wondered if children that young could ever be as good and obedient as they were. ha.

Dealing with grief is a difficult topic and though I have not experienced the loss of a spouse, I thought Britton handled it well.

I was slightly disappointed after The Gentleman Physician to not see Mr. Macon get what was coming to him. I didn’t realize at the time that this book would be the continuation and I was gratified to see Macon get his due this time. It was quite satisfying.

For some reason the tender moments of this book struck swoony chords with me. The Earl’s sweet interaction with the boys and his giving permission to call him Papa if they chose- killer sweet. And then the confession of love moment was tender and swoony for sure. Seriously, sometimes these kinds of things make me roll my eyes but not this time. It was all so sweet.

    Sex: kisses

Violence: yes, a punch in the face in defense of his wife, threatening with a gun, attempted kidnapping.
