Amber Marie Sterlington, the Rage of the Season in Regency-era London, has her pick of men and she knows what she wants most in a husband: a title and a fortune. Why would she ever marry for something as fickle as love? And why would she ever look twice at Thomas Richards, a third son of a country lord?

But Amber’s social standing is shattered by a rare disorder which causes the loss of her hair. Publicly humiliated and estranged from her shamed family, she is exiled to Yorkshire, facing a future she never expected in a circumstance far below what she has known all her life. Humbled and lonely, Amber wonders if isolation is for the best and questions what real love means until she finds a romantic path to a man who offers unconditional love.

Loved this unique Regency story! It was heartbreaking at times, but I loved seeing the main character change over the course of the story.

I was surprised to see a topic such as Amber’s disease treated in a Regency romance; it’s just something I’ve never encountered before. However, I thought it was interesting and made the author’s first Regency romance stand out from the crowd. Can’t wait for more from Kilpack.

  3. I don’t normally enjoy reading stories where the main character is so flawed that she is unlikeable, but in this case the author did such a fabulous job with Amber’s character arc. Amber’s vulnerabilities and motivations for her attitudes and behavior are revealed as we get to know her and her family situation. As a sister to three, I could even relate to some of her sibling rivalry and frustrations. I don’t want to give anything away, but the trial that sends Amber to the far north country and outcast from her family and society is one that is truly humbling. I loved Suzanne, her lady’s maid who unwillingly accompanies her and learns to find the good in their situation and the good in Amber. They lean on each other and become sisters of a sort as they fend for themselves in a meager cottage without the amenities they are used to.

Thomas is presented as something of an anomaly in England’s high society- a man who would rather work his own farm than rely on an annual income from his brother. A man who values the character of a person over their standing in society. His own quality of character becomes apparent to Amber as she forms a friendship of sorts with him during her exile and gives her the hope than she can be accepted for the improved individual she has become despite her outward appearance.

  4. I was leery about reading this book at first–and then ended up absolutely loving it. Amber’s emotional transformation is beautiful, as her trial leads her to discovering the better part of herself. Suzanne was also a fantastic character–I love how Josi Kilpack fleshes her out into a full, rounded character with a life and needs of her own, not simply as a sidekick to Amber, and the growth of their friendship and loyalty is wonderful.

I loved this book. I didn’t like Amber at all in the beginning of the book, but as soon as she was banished to live basically in the middle of nowhere with only Suzanne she started changing. Suzanne is great too because she makes Amber do things she never would have done by herself. Such a great story.

I loved this book! I had no idea about the storyline, so it was all a surprise, and I had a hard time imagining how Amber would change. But change she did, and it was natural and believable. I loved seeing it unfold. This is a bit of a different Regency romance–in a good way

Wow, I felt like this book had so much more depth to it than any other Regency novel I’ve read and I really liked that! I love the different, deeper perspective this novel gives to the customs of the time. There was so much great character development in Amber in a way that I found plausible. Although this is considered a romance, the majority of the story is focused on her character arc. I actually thought that was great because it showed how we must all be strong and self accepting on our own before we can truly be strong with someone else and accept them. The romantic parts were spot on though! I loved Thomas as he was a kind, strong, hard working regular guy who knew what was important in life. And I loved Suzanne and her relationship with Amber. Even though most people would not go through something like Amber, I think there were lessons from it that we all could learn. Josi Kilpack remains on the top of my authors to always read list as I have now read so many wonderful books by her and in so many genres- women’s fiction, culinary mysteries, and now regency romance! Can’t wait to see what else she comes up with!
