Tara MacInnes is a normal high-school Sophomore who has a crush on her friend Mark. When her parents are killed in a car crash and she learns she is adopted, Mark is right by her side to help her cope. Having just lost his mother to cancer, he knows how hard it can be to lose a parent.
Tara thinks she is going crazy when she starts seeing things, but when Mark sees them too she wonders if they both aren’t losing it.
When they go investigating about Tara’s adoption they are lead to Alaska. There they meet a young couple who thinks Tara is really some missing princess from the Higher Realms, and they have proof.
Going slightly against their will, Tara and Mark are tied up and put into an extravagant wagon. They soon find themselves pulled up into the sky through the northern lights and through the mist into the lands of the Higher Realms, which consist of the Earth, Sky and Sea kingdoms. It is a land full of giants, trolls, fairies and magic. It is also a land at war. Tara and Mark find themselves in the thick of it.
When Tara finds out there is an item that could end the war she seeks to find it, and in doing so finds so much more than she bargains for.
