Jacob could hear what sounded like a thousand voices calling his name from the dark, hissing and moaning in a sickly chorus as if they were one voice–taunting him from the moon shadows beneath the trees–beneath the low lying limbs in tall grass. The moon was as bright as ever and the shadows beneath the trees as dark as a black hole. They were everywhere, much to his dismay, and he was terrified.

If only Carly were here, he thought, and then realized how wrong headed his thinking was. He looked down the path as far as he could into the darkness, hoping he would see her, or possibly one of his other friends. It had only been minutes since they’d left. Was she safe? Was she in trouble like him? He squinted harder hoping to see better…. Nothing….

Jacob was beginning to really hate Carthage Falls. There was something wrong with the place…seriously wrong. From the moment he and his mother had arrived to live with his grandfather, things had been weird. It started with strange dreams–nightmares–that he couldn’t explain, and now this—shadows oozing out from under the trees, calling his name. As he turned to run, he realized it was too late….
