As the only doctor in the frontier town of Savage Wells, Gideon MacNamara knows his prospects for a bride are limited. The womenfolk in town are either too young, too old, or already spoken for. So, being a practical man, he decides to take advantage of the matchmaking service of the day—mail-order brides—and sends away for a woman with nursing experience.

When Miriam steps off the stagecoach in Savage Wells, she sees a bright future in front of her. But when the town—and Gideon—meets her, ready for a wedding, her excitement quickly turns to horror. Somehow Dr. MacNamara’s message had gotten turned around. He didn’t want a nurse, he wanted a wife. When she refuses to marry him, she finds herself stranded in Savage Wells with some very unhappy townspeople.

But Gideon is not like the other men Miriam has met. Embarrassed by the misunderstanding, he offers her a job, and the two begin an awkward—and often humorous—dance of gettting to know each other as they work to care for the people of their town. Romance blossoms between the two, but when a former medical associate of Miriam’s arrives in town, Gideon and the other townsfolk must rally to protect Miriam from a dangerous fate. Gideon and Miriam must decide if they are willing to risk their hearts for each other even as buried secrets are brought to light.

  1. I enjoyed the first book and was excited to read the second. It was fun to see some of the same characters and meet some new ones.
This book focuses on Gideon, the town doctor. He thinks he is ordering a mail-order bride that is also a nurse that will be able to help him in his practice.
She has some secrets from a past that she is trying to run away from and accepts the unwanted job of a nurse in the wild west. When she arrives she is shocked to find out there was a miscommunication and she is supposed to also be a bride.
There is a little mystery as you try to discover her past secrets. It was an enjoyable read, although not as much action as the first novel.
Although this is part of a series, you could read it as a stand alone and not be lost.

I read this book before but just listened to the audio version of this book. It was great. The narrator was really good at sharing the story with varied voices.

I spent a good deal of this book with my heart in my throat. How horrific Miriam’s life had been! I think Ms. Eden dealt with the difficult topics of this story in a sensitive way. The first book in the series dealt with dementia and PTSD and this one continued with that and added the discussion of people being unjustly committed to asylums for health issues. Not easy subjects to put in a love story.

I loved both Miriam and Gideon. They are both so compassionate and giving. The whole set up for their relationship was rather humorous and there was some fun banter in this story but mostly it was pretty serious. Both Miriam and Gideon are “broken” but they do not allow that to prevent them from helping everyone they can. And they gain everyone’s affection because of it.

The townspeople are wonderful. So many interesting characters that have obvious flaws but are supported by everyone else. Some are pretty quirky.

I was set to fully dislike both of their parents. Yet at least with Gideon’s parents my dislike did not last long. I’m not resolved in my feelings toward Miriam’s parents. I think they were at a loss and taken advantage of but that doesn’t excuse them. I was glad to see a confrontation. It didn’t resolve their family issues but I think it did open doors for greater understanding.

We don’t really get to see what happens to the villain in this story in the end though we have a good idea what is coming. I would have loved to see him get what he deserved but apparently Ms. Eden isn’t as vindictive as I.

So much of this book is filled with fighting through the conflict that when we get to the happily ever after part I was so relieved and felt very swoony. A big ahhhhhhh for the ending.

I was happy to have so many characters from the first book play a role in this one and I’m curious as to which character will get the next book…

    Sex: no
    Language: no
Violence: threatening behavior and words, mistreatment and murder of asylum victims we hear about after the fact. Verbal and emotional abuse from the villain.
