I’m looking at redesigning the book spotlight posts just a bit. I want them to be simple and easy to read, but with the most important information easily available. I’ve tried to make the images from My Book Ratings work but with the theme I’m using and the Amazon button, it just looks cluttered and messy.

These are the changes I’m planning to make. Feedback would be welcome. The top part would still have all the information about the book, as before (see links above). This would be followed by the book description here. The description needs to have several paragraphs so it displays correctly.

Adding a Rating line at the bottom of the description, using the My Book Ratings system. The link would go to my page that explains why I’m using these ratings, and links from there would go to the My Book Ratings page.

Deleting the Tweetable because almost no one actually uses them. Also because it takes a too much time to create them and I can’t include an image. Anyone who wants to share can either use the social media buttons below the Amazon button, or share from my tweets. Alternately, I may add them at the very bottom of the post, but I’m strongly leaning toward not. (I’ll still put them on the Monthly Giveaway pages, because people DO share those.

Deleting Star Ratings where visitors to the site can click and rate the books. Again, because almost no one ever uses them. Or a bunch of friends give the author 5 stars just out of support. They aren’t as helpful as I’d hoped they’d be. I’d rather have visitors leave thoughtful comments on the posts.

Keeping the Author bios. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to send a photo and info to me at ldsbookgeek@gmail.com.

Debating on the Related Posts. They’re built in based on tags and book info, so they take no time on my part to create. I like them, but just wondering if other people like them too. Yes? No?

Rating: Mild. Mild kissing; mild (nonsexual) violence or horror.

I don’t see a problem deleting the tweetables or the star ratings. I like the idea of encouraging people to go give the book a content rating. Related posts? If they don’t take any work, go ahead and leave them in. As a reader, I’d like the content advisory/rating right after the book’s blurb. Or right after the “add a rating” link.

I like the look and format of this very much. I think linking with My Book Cave is a great idea! I, too, like the stars, but if no one’s using them … ? And if people don’t use the tweetables, then I think just keeping the social links is enough. Just my 2 cents.

Well, I base my comment on no one using them by the fact that there are so many books with no stars. I don’t really have a way to track the stars without looking at each post and seeing what they have. That function of the site only takes a few seconds to do. So this feedback is helping me make the decision to keep them—at least for now. Thanks!
