Between a bad breakup and a rocky relationship with her overbearing father, twenty-three-year-old Vanessa Clark has a history of being disappointed by the men in her life. So when her long-lost grandfather reenters the scene and persuades her to tour northern Portugal on one of his river cruise ships, Vanessa boards the vessel looking for answers about her estranged family, not looking for love.

Captain Matias Romano has enough to worry about without having to babysit his boss’s spoiled American granddaughter, no matter how good-looking and wealthy she is. First the issue with the refrigerators, and now the ship’s computers are malfunctioning—he’ll be relieved when this trip is over and he can get back to business as usual.

But as Matias plays tour guide on Vanessa’s excursions and they work together to investigate a series of suspicious accidents aboard, they both realize there’s more to the other than first impressions.

Can Vanessa work through her complicated past to make room for Matias in her future, or will they pass like ships in the night?

Rating: Mild. Mild kissing.

I really, really want to go on a river cruise in Portugal now. I’ve never had Portugal on my bucket list but now I’m intrigued.

This is a sweet clean romance. It would make a good read for a cruise. 🙂 Or a beach read or whatever.

I liked the captain as a character even if he did make assumptions to begin with. I didn’t like Vanessa as much because I think she was just an angry person. She was mad at her father and an ex and took it out on her grandfather and other men around her. I was glad she finally came around to knowing her grandfather instead of just being angry toward him. But it made it harder for me to like her.

The Romano family is a big boisterous family and other than mentioning having cousins they didn’t appear in this book and that was kinda disappointing. I like big crazy families.

Update: Okay, I just listened to #3 and the whole sabotage part of the story makes sense now. It set up the next book. So you can ignore that complaint.
Also I listened to #3 on a different device and the narration worked much better. I just needed to be able to have better speed adjustment possibilities. So both my complaints are non issues now.
