The Lord of Blackwell Manor, Miles, is plagued by a family curse that changes him into a shape-shifting wolf every month during the full moon. Lucy-a smart, attractive, and well-respected botanist-travels to Blackwell Manor to take care of her sick cousin, Kate, who is married to Miles’s younger brother. For Lucy, the trip is a welcomed respite from her work and recent discovery-a breakthrough serum that could eliminate the scourge of vampires from London.

However, Lucy finds more than she bargained for when she arrives at the Manor. Miles, who is brash and inhospitable, does not take kindly to visitors. He is still unsettled by the mysterious death of his newlywed wife. And then there’s Marie, Miles’s sister, who was attacked and murdered just weeks earlier. Miles is horrified to think that he might be to blame for the deaths.

And who is the ghost that haunt the halls? Lucy is convinced that the death of Miles’s wife and sister-as well as her cousin’s mysterious illness-are tied together, but how?

Lady Charlesworth has her eye on inheriting Blackwell Manor for her family. Could her daughter, Candice, or her son, Arthur, have had a hand in the mysterious deaths? The clues make a vampire suspect highly likely.

During her investigation, Lucy finds herself caring deeply for Miles, but he fights to keep his distance in order to protect Lucy from his family’s secret. And, yet, he feels attracted toward the woman who is able to look past the fearsome-looking scar that has marred his handsome face.

With no other option, Miles and Lucy must work together if they are to find the answer to the mysteries at the Manor. But that’s not all Lucy wants to solve. There’s a deeper mystery behind Miles. Can she solve that, too? Ultimately, she must decide if she can love the man, beast and all.

Beauty and the Clockwork Beast was a unique twist on the classic story of Beauty and the Beast. I had not read the synopsis prior to reading the book; therefore, I had no idea how Ms. Allen was going to add the Steampunk genre to the story. This book ended up surprising me in many ways (both with the use of Steampunk, which I knew it would have, and the supernatural, which I didn’t). If those kind of twists are your thing, this book was well written and is for you!

This was fabulous. I was a little skeptic when I first started reading it, but once I finished the first page I couldn’t put it down. Every chapter had a new twist and turn. It was one roller coaster ride I would get back in line for. I had so much fun reading this book. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone and everyone.

Steampunk isn’t my favorite genre, but this was a fun book. I listened to the audio book, and the narrator was fabulous. I loved the main characters, especially Lucy with her strength and independence.

I loved this book! It was not at all what I was expecting and I couldn’t put it down! I would definitely recommended this book.

I can honestly say that this is one of my absolutely favorite novels! The story was so suspenseful and definitely kept me guessing – I mean, I couldn’t put it down!! The romance was beautiful and the twist to the story was so creative. I would for sure recommend this book to my friends!

I enjoy reading the proper romance books but when this one came out I didn’t think I would like it. I’m not into ghosts, vampires and werewolves and such. The book was sitting out on display at the library and I thought I’d give it a shot anyway. I really didn’t understand what steampunk means and as I started reading I was confused. Things weren’t meshing with the time period and I kept going back to try to figure out what I missing. Eventually it became clear and before long I was into the story so much that I was no longer concerned about vampires and werewolves. I just cared about the characters and how they would resolve the mystery. I knew the romance would work out and I was pretty sure who the bad guy was but there were enough red herrings that I wasn’t fully certain until the reveal. There were also some twists that totally threw me for a loop.

Since I was setting aside my sense of realism for the storyline anyway, I chose to ignore the fact that I doubted that Lucy could recover so quickly from the fall she took and that she didn’t have broken bones and more serious injuries.

As one might expect with vampires and werewolves there is some violence in the book but it isn’t horribly graphic. Thankfully.

The book also included a novella about Marie at the end which I kinda just wish was part of the book from the beginning instead of after reading the rest but I guess not fully understanding Marie played into the intrigue of the Clockwork Beast.

I enjoyed the book far more than I expected to and want to read the next in the series but I think that in general I’ll still avoid vampires and werewolves-unless they are part of the Proper Romance collection.
